SUMMARY:OBTU Chapter Meeting September 18\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:IMPORTANT: SEE BELOW NEW MEETING ROOM! \nMUSSEL MATTERS / URBAN STREAM RESEARCH OBTU Chapter Meeting – September 18 @ 7:00PM \n \n  \nYou are invited to a special screening of the original mini-documentary – Mussel Matters: Saving Critical Species in DuPage County.  \nThis short film highlights modern challenges within the Upper DuPage River and Salt Creek systems and community efforts to protect the local watersheds that impact nearly one million people across 77 Northern Illinois municipalities.  \nThe film was a co-production of North Central College\, The Conservation Foundation\, and the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County. It premiered at the For Love of Waterways (FLOW) Film Festival hosted by North Central College in March 2024. Oak Brook Trout Unlimited was proud to be one of the sponsors of this film festival which featured specially selected short films to increase the knowledge\, concern\, and action about our local water and sustainability issues.  \nAfter the film\, Everett Krause\, Aquatic Technician\, will be giving a more in-depth presentation of the work done at the DuPage Forest Preserve District’s Urban Stream Research Center.  \nFreshwater mussels are one of the most imperiled animal groups in the U.S. Known as the “livers of the rivers” freshwater mussels provide numerous ecosystem services. In addition to this\, Freshwater mussels can act as an indicator species whose presence\, or absence\, tells ecologist in general about water quality and the environment. At the Urban Stream Research Center (USRC)\, staff work to propagate Freshwater mussels with the hope to keep common species common. However\, this is no small task with a complex lifecycle and dwindling habitat USRC staff need to overcome these challenges in order to produce mussels for stocking in streams and rivers in DuPage County and beyond.  \nThe Urban Stream Research Center is located at Blackwell Forest Preserve in Warrenville\, Illinois. It is one of the few facilities in the country propagating freshwater mussels. Since opening in 2012\, the Urban Stream Research Center has successfully propagated more than 25\,000 mussels that have been released into local waterways. This aquatics laboratory also serves as a field research station\, partnering with local conservation groups\, universities and other institutions on collaborative applied research in aquatic conservation that seeks solutions to problems facing urban rivers and streams. \nAfter the film\, Everett Krause\, Aquatic Technician\, will be giving a more in-depth presentation of the work done at the DuPage Forest Preserve District’s Urban Stream Research Center. \n   \nSpeaker Everett Krause \nEverett has B.S. in biology from Dominican University in River Forest\, IL and a Master’s of fisheries and Aquatic science from the University of Florida. His professional\, and academic interests lie in the field of aquaculture\, specifically integrated multi-trophic aquaculture systems. He currently works as an aquatic technician with the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County\, where he propagates Freshwater mussels for reintroduction into the Des Plaines\, Fox\, and Chicago River watersheds. \nThis is a hybrid meeting: \n Note:   We have been notified that our normal Oak Brook Park District meeting room in the Central Park West Building will be unavailable due to planned maintenance instead we will again be meeting in Studio ‘C’ in the Family Recreation Center at the Oak Brook Park District (see map below) or you can attend the meeting remotely by signing on to Zoom. \nLink to Zoom meeting: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/82768033798?pwd=eF5aNQMPuSXfMDd6CELhoHsZBsuwcH.1  \nMeeting ID: 827 6803 3798 \nPasscode: 499496 \nOR Connect by Phone: \nPhone #:   (312) 626-6799     Meeting ID: 827 6803 3798    Passcode: 499496

SUMMARY:OBTU Chapter Meeting May 15\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:IMPORTANT: SEE BELOW NEW MEETING ROOM! \nTopic: “Brook trout populations in Wisconsin” \nSummary: Historical stocking practices have altered the spatial genetic structure of brook trout populations in Wisconsin. These practices have largely obscured the natural patterns of genetic variation that once existed across the landscape. However\, genetic analyses offer a means of disentangling the influence of stocking from endemic population structure. By employing these tools\, fisheries managers can gain valuable insights to guide restoration efforts and promote the wellbeing of native brook trout populations. Dr. Homola will present two recent genetic studies that have analyzed over 130 brook trout populations from across Wisconsin. Dr. Homola will discuss how the findings from these studies are informing management strategies aimed at restoring natural patterns of genetic variation and ensuring the long-term persistence of healthy brook trout populations in Wisconsin. \nSpeaker Jared Homola: \n \nDr. Jared Homola earned graduate degrees from Grand Valley State University and University of Maine and then served as a post-doctoral fellow at Michigan State University before becoming the Assistant Unit Leader of the Wisconsin Cooperative Fishery Research Unit in 2021. As director of the Molecular Conservation Genetics Laboratory at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point\, his research program addresses Unit cooperator needs using a variety of genomic\, bioinformatic\, and statistical tools. While working primary on fishes of the Great Lakes basin and upper Midwest\, Dr. Homola also has research experience on species ranging from bacteria and viruses to birds\, reptiles\, and amphibians. He is particularly interested in understanding ecological and evolutionary responses to environmental pressures\, including land use change\, climate change\, disease\, and harvest. \n  \nOBTU Collaboration with Dr. Homola: \nWe will also be discussing Oak Brook TU’s pilot program “Using Environmental DNA (eDNA) to Detect Brook Trout in Streams of the Driftless Area”. Jared’s lab will be conducting the genetic analysis of the samples collected by OBTU. Sample data is expected to provide an important tool for the Driftless Brook Trout Conservation Portfolio being developed by Trout Unlimited. The Conservation Portfolio is a scientifically based approach to be used to identify specific actions that advance brook trout conservation. \nThis is a hybrid meeting:  Note:   We have been notified that our normal Oak Brook Park District meeting room in the Central Park West Building will be unavailable due to planned maintenance on May 15 instead we will be meeting in Studio ‘C’ in the Family Recreation Center at the Oak Brook Park District (see map below) or you can attend the meeting remotely by signing on to Zoom. \nLink to Zoom meeting: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/83651717582?pwd=0w2GSrG9o4xZ0tO9uckogZfl1ZW7K7.1 \nMeeting ID: 836 5171 7582      Passcode: 210957 \nOR Connect by Phone: \nPhone #:   (312) 626-6799     Meeting ID: 836 5171 7582    Passcode: 210957

SUMMARY:OBTU Chapter Meeting April 17\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:Topic: The Power of Partnerships \nSummary: Bringing together partners from across the Midwest allows the Iowa DNR to expand coldwater conservation beyond what any one group could accomplish alone.  From expanding and protecting angler access\, to improving instream habitat\, and understanding where coldwater habitat exists on the landscape\, partnerships make it possible. I’ll cover advances in coldwater conservation that have occurred in Iowa over the past 5 years. This will include an update on North Bear Creek\, OBTU’s 50th anniversary commemorative project. \n \nSpeaker Mike Siepker: \nMike joined the Iowa DNR’s Fisheries Management team in 2014 as the Natural Resources Biologist for the Decorah District in Northeast Iowa where he managed coldwater and warmwater streams and lakes\, investigated fish kills\, and worked with private landowners to manage private land for public fishing in an eight-county area. Recently\, Mike was promoted to Trout Program Supervisor and now coordinates the activities of 3 coldwater hatcheries and 2 management teams as they deliver coldwater conservation and recreation across Northeast Iowa. Prior to his work in Iowa\, Mike spent 10 years in Missouri serving as the Missouri Department of Conservation’s Sportfish Population Ecologist.  During that time\, Mike led statewide research efforts to improve the management of Missouri’s bass\, trout\, catfish\, and walleye fisheries.  Mike holds a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Ecology from Iowa State University and a Masters in Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. \nDave Carlson presents OBTU’s 50th Anniversary Commemorative Grant to Mike Siepker\, Iowa DNR\, at OBTU’s 50th celebration at the Oak Brook Park District on Aug 12\, 2023. This grant is supporting stream restoration work on the North Branch of Bear Creek in the Decorah Area (One of Iowa’s very best trout streams). \nThis is a hybrid meeting:  You can attend in person at the Central Park West Building at the Oak Brook Park District (see map below) or you can attend the meeting remotely by signing on to Zoom. \nLink to Zoom meeting: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/86732096559?pwd=o2hSh4zVi0CcFd4PZqv2kOJXnD7iet.1 \nMeeting ID: 867 3209 6559      Passcode: 992668 \nOR Connect by Phone: \nPhone #:   (312) 626-6799     Meeting ID: 867 3209 6559    Passcode: 992668
