SUMMARY:OBTU Chapter Meeting May 21\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:SPEAKER: Drew Kazenski\, co-chair for the IL chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers (BHA) \nTOPIC: What can be done to protect access to Illinois streams and rivers? \nThe IL Chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers and the Oak Book Chapter of Trout Unlimited are joining forces to host a public meeting to talk about protecting public access to Illinois streams and rivers. We invite other concerned individuals and organizations to JOIN US on May 21 to discuss issues\, answer questions\, and plan future actions. \nDespite laws and court rulings supporting public river access\, ambiguous legal interpretations have led to landowners and state officials blocking access; and restricting rights to Illinois’ waterways. \nLegislation to clarify Illinois’ confusing stream access situation\, and ensure the right to public waters for paddlers\, hunters\, anglers\, and other outdoor enthusiasts is being considered in the Illinois General Assembly. House Bill 1873 protects public access to navigable rivers while respecting private landowner concerns\, ensuring Illinoisans can enjoy their waterways just like residents of neighboring states. \nTogether\, through individual actions\, advocacy\, and collaborative efforts\, we can protect our right to enjoy our waterways! \nMore About Drew Kazenski: Drew Kazenski grew up in rural central Illinois and was raised from the beginning with a deep understanding and respect for hunting\, fishing and conservation.  As an avid hiker\, hunter and fly fisherman; he has had whitetails make him tremble in Illinois\, chased Merriam turkeys in South Dakota\, and landed West-slope Cutthroats in Montana\, all due to public land and conservation efforts before him.  Drew believes if you are consuming or taking you should do some part to give back\, one of his reasons for joining BHA.  Drew encourages everyone to find away to give back to the land we all consume from. Currently\, Drew still resides in central Illinois with his wife and golden retriever enjoying their passion for the outdoors. \n \nDrew Kazenski\, Co-Chair of BHA Chicago Chapter \n \nLink to BHA National Web Site: https://www.backcountryhunters.org/ \nLink to BHA Illinois Chapter: https://www.backcountryhunters.org/illinois \n  \nZoom meeting to start at 7:00pm. SUMMARY:OBTU Chapter Meeting Feb 19\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Topic: ‘Muskegon River Fly Fishing Opportunities’ Jay will discuss Muskegon River multi-species fly fishing opportunities with an emphasis on steelhead.\n \nSpeaker: Jay Allen\, Head Guide and Owner of Muskegon River Inn will speak in person at the Oak Brook Park District (Central Park West Building).\nLink to Jay Allen’s Site:  https://muskegonriverinn.com/ \nOBTU Fall Steelhead Fishing Outing with Jay is being planned: Stay tuned for details to be announced upon completion of event plans. Note: Thanks to Jay for agreeing to speak on short notice. (Ike Rhoads was originally scheduled & announced for Feb 19\, but withdrew due to conflict.)\n\n \nJay Allen with a Muskegon River Steelhead\n\nMore About Jay: Most of the year Jay resides in Newaygo\, Michigan\, and is a fly fishing guide on the Muskegon River and surrounding area.  In addition to being a highly accomplished guide\, Jay has an entrepreneurial spirit.  Winning approval of a government grant\, Jay & his wife procured a large\, historic building in downtown Newaygo and redeveloped the building into what is now the Muskegon River Inn.\n\nFor many years\, Jay has spent some of the summer months guiding in Wyoming. He has partnered with Turpin Meadows Ranch as the resort’s fishing manager leading multi-day horseback/fly-fishing/camping trips in the Yellowstone back country\, and he has also partnered with a native American outfitter to lead fly fishing trips within the restricted-access Wind River Reservation.\n\nYou may remember Jay from past presentations.  Over the past 8 years\, he has delivered talks to OBTU on Muskegon River Steelhead fishing\, Yellowstone area back country\, and Wind River expeditions. Jay is an outstanding guide who will put you on the fish. He also serves the best guide lunch you have ever had!\n\nOBTU thanks Jay for his annual donations of a guide trip and lodging at the Muskegon River Inn for each of the past several years in support of OBTU fund raising!\nThis is a hybrid meeting:  You can attend in person at the Central Park West Building in the Oak Brook Park District (see map below) or participate in the meeting remotely by signing on to Zoom. \nLink to Zoom meeting: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/88295185641?pwd=9E2OVdnbkkOxJj2GEMH8EgrtCJZXMd.1 \nMeeting ID: 882 9518 5641    Passcode: 695564 \nOR Connect by Phone: \nPhone #:   (312) 626-6799     Meeting ID: 882 9518 5641 Passcode: 695564 \n
